Did you know grapes contain the following vitamins: vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, B6, magnesium, vitamin B12, and iron? Increased consumption of grapes may be associated with a better overall diet according to a recent observational cross-sectional survey published in the Journal of Food Science. After analyzing the diets of more than 221,800 children and adults researchers found that those who ate grapes (100% juice, raisins, or fresh gapes) had an increased Healthy Eating Index. Those who ate grapes consumed more whole fruits and vegetables, and less solid fat and added sugars.
This study does require that participants recall what they ate in the last 24 hours. One weakness is people forgetting or making up what the really ate. This study also did not show the relative benefit of eating grapes compared to other fruits. Do grapes have greater benefit than other fruit? Those who are eating grapes probably like fruit and therefore eat more of it. Also note this study was supported by National Grape & Wine Initiative, Sacramento, CA. However, this article has over 221,800 participants which makes it more valid.
Grapes can go with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They are good for children and can be used as finger foods. Adding grapes to any diet is a good idea and increasing fruit consumption will aid in increasing health. Plus grapes taste great, and you can even freeze them if you want to try something new!
